Craig says he can never know what it’s like for his wife Sarah to confront mental illness, but he has done everything he can to support her.
Craig
As far as experiences that I had prior to meeting Sarah, I had empathy, which I think everyone has, but I had no knowledge or understanding of what she was going through. I tried to feel for her, I tried to make her comfortable, but I didn’t and can’t know exactly how she feels. So I had to, you know, I read, I had contact with her psychiatrist, which Sarah was gratefully open to me having conversation with her about. And just asked a lot of questions. It’s an on-going process. I learned a number of things with regards to the challenges regarding mental health. Particularly, there’s not a lot of information out there when we first dealt with this. There weren’t large advertisements for support groups for family members or information on medication. And over time we’ve seen more awareness through different organizations that have helped us.
What
Say it out loud means to me is that it’s important to get things out in the open, to talk about things, discuss it, to share, to educate, to help those who are in need, and the family members of those who are in need.
